Safety Tips for ATVs & UTVs

At Staples & Associates, we value our clients and their safety. ATVs and UTVs can be essential for work or used for pleasure if the proper guidelines are met to own one and are used responsibly. However, they can be responsible for numerous injuries and fatalities. It’s important to know and follow safety rules when riding both.

ATV Safety Rules

  • Always wear a helmet that is Department of Transportation (DOT)-compliant along with goggles, long sleeves, long pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots.
  • ATVs are designed for off-road use only, therefore avoid riding on paved roads when possible.
  • Never drink or be under the influence of drugs while riding.
  • Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV, and no more than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two people.
  • Ride an ATV that’s right for your age.
  • ATVs are not toys and riders younger than 16 need to be supervised.
  • Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
  • Be sure to have the proper training both online and hands-on.

UTV Safety Rules

  • Always fasten your seat belt, wear a helmet, and any other protective gear, and be sure to always keep all parts of your body inside the UTV.
  • Just like ATVs, UTVs are designed for off-road use. Avoid paved surfaces when possible.
  • Drive at safe speeds and only in designated areas, use care when turning and when crossing slopes.
  • Never drink or be under the influence of drugs while riding
  • UTVs are not toys and should not be driven unless you’re 16 or older and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Never carry more passengers than the UTV is designed for, and never allow a passenger who is too small to sit in a passenger seat to ride.
  • Be sure to read and follow the operator’s manual and warning labels.
  • Be sure to have the proper training both online and hands-on.
