On June 3, 2019, firefighters in Kent County, Maryland responded to a 32’ x 30’ wood frame pole barn fire. According to officials, the structure and contents were considered to be a total loss. The estimated damage totaled at $25,000 for the structure and $245,000 for the contents of the barn. Without insurance, the cost of replacing the structure its contents would be completely devastating to any family.

The Delmarva Peninsula contains some of the most highly productive farmland on the east coast. For over 300 years, agriculture has been a mainstay of the economy on the eastern shore, and more than half of the areas residents continue to farm today. In 2018 alone, the Delmarva raised 605 million chickens in 5,166 chicken houses.

The poultry industry has maintained economic stability on the eastern shore for years. Since 2014, Delmarva’s poultry industry increased its economic output by 18.6%, producing 4.3 billion pounds of chicken that were worth $3.4 billion in 2018. In total, employees and farmers that were associated with Delmarva’s poultry industry were $1.05 billion.
